In terms of cutting equipment, a mitre saw and coping saw are both going to help you successfully chop the boards without causing any damage to the materials itself. Obviously, you want the skirting boards that you’ve picked, whether it’s MDF or some other material, and instant grab adhesive to fix the skirting board to the wall.

If you want to screw the boards to the wall, then most households will likely have a drill, nails, and screws. A hammer can be beneficial for making sure the skirting boards are sitting right up against the wall. Wood filler and decorator’s chalk are good for filling in any small gaps.

How to fit new skirting boards – Housing industry (residential)

Step 1 – You’ll first want to measure the area where the skirting board is going to be fitted in order to fit and cut the relevant boards up properly. You might want to add around 20-25% extra onto the measurements in order to make room for any initial cuts where you might have gone in too far.

Step 2 – Decide on which side of the skirting board is facing outwards. Some will have a different appearance on each side, so you want to make sure which side you prefer. Mark these up with your pencil so that you know when it comes to attaching it to the wall.

Step 3 – It’s now time to measure up, cut, and then fit any of the skirting boards that are going around a square edge. Internal corners will need you to cut a 45-degree angle with your mitre saw, and then you’ll use your coping saw to cut away anything extra that you don’t need. If you’re a bit unsure of how easily you’ll be able to cut it, practice on some spare bits of board beforehand. With your external corners, again, you’ll need to mitre them at a 45-degree angle. This will then be repeated but on the opposite side for the other corner of the board.

Step 4 – Attach your boards using some instant grab adhesive. If you want to fix it to the wall with screws, then you can do this for either plasterboard or solid walls. Wood filler can help cover up the nail heads with gaps filled in using the decorator’s chaulk.
