Architraves FAQ
Architrave is a form of moulding between a doorway and a wall and is used in the majority of houses, offices and other buildings. Due to its use, architraves are commonly incorrectly referred to as a door casing or door surround.
In the majority of households, architraves are made from either MDF, hardwood or softwood.
Architraves can be used on several parts around a house or office. Some of these parts are:
- Window frames - adding architrave around window frames gives the window frame a more focused design, compared to the plain design without.
- Loft hatches - Most loft hatches in a house are hidden but not invisible, so by adding architraves around your loft hatch gives it a more distinctive look.
- Doors - Architraves is used around doors to hide the joints and any shrinkage that follows between the door and the wall.
