Choosing your specification

Every Single Chamfer is machined to order, so you choose the exact thickness, height, length and finish to suit your project. Not sure what to pick? The guides below walk you through each option, and our team is always happy to help.

📏 Which thickness should I choose?

15mm

The most popular choice for new-build homes and widely used by national house builders. Ideal where you're replacing existing 15mm skirting or working to a tighter budget.

New buildsReplacing 15mmModern homesBudget projects
⭐ Most popular
18mm

Our standard thickness and the choice for the vast majority of renovation and refurbishment projects. 18mm gives a substantial feel and excellent durability without looking oversized.

25mm

Chosen for larger rooms, high-specification homes and premium developments where a more substantial finish is desired. Pairs particularly well with taller skirting and decorative mouldings.

Still unsure? 18mm is our best-selling thickness and the option we recommend for most homes.

📐 What height should I choose?

Height has one of the biggest impacts on the finished look of a room. There are no fixed rules, but matching the height to your ceiling height, room size and property style creates a balanced, professional finish.

94–119mm
Modern homes & replacing existing skirting

Smaller boards give a clean, understated look and are common in newer builds. A good choice when matching existing skirting without making a room feel heavier.

144–169mm
The all-round choice for most homes

Our best-selling range suits the vast majority of UK properties, enough presence to frame a room beautifully without overpowering it. If you're unsure, this is what we recommend.

194–219mm
Designed to make a statement

Taller boards create a premium, luxurious look and keep the right proportions in bigger spaces. Popular in period homes, barn conversions and high-end developments.

📦 Which length should I choose?

The right board length can save time and money on site. Longer boards reduce the number of joins for a cleaner finish; shorter boards are easier to transport and manoeuvre.

3050mm
Ideal for most rooms & easier to handle

Suitable for the majority of installations and often chosen where rooms are smaller or access is restricted. Easier to carry upstairs and position during fitting.

Standard roomsSmaller propertiesRestricted access
⭐ Recommended for larger walls
4200mm
Fewer joins for a superior finish

Lets many walls be completed in a single length, reducing visible joints for a cleaner, seamless appearance. Popular in open-plan homes and commercial installs.

Large roomsOpen-planLong wallsPremium finish
Single door, one side
Enough to frame 1 side of a standard doorway

2 lengths at 2440mm plus 1 length at 1220mm will comfortably cover both legs and the head of a single doorway on one side, with allowance for mitred cuts.

2 × 2440mm1 × 1220mmSingle doors
Pair of doors, one side
Enough to frame 1 side of a double doorway

3 lengths at 2440mm will cover one side of a pair of doors (double doorway), with enough spare for mitred corner cuts.

3 × 2440mmPair of doors
Which should I buy? Walls under 3 metres are usually best with 3050mm boards. For longer walls, or to minimise joints, 4200mm gives the cleanest overall finish. Unsure? Send us your room dimensions and we'll recommend the most suitable option to minimise waste.

🎨 Which finish should I choose?

Choose how your skirting arrives, from raw MDF you finish yourself to boards that are almost ready to decorate.

Unprimed

Perfect if you're carrying out the complete decorating process yourself.

  • Lowest cost option
  • Raw moisture-resistant MDF
  • Maximum flexibility

Primed

Professionally factory-primed to save you time.

  • Ready for undercoat & top coat
  • Smooth factory-applied primer
  • Less preparation on site
⭐ Most popular Close-up of factory undercoated MDF skirting board
Undercoated

The quickest and easiest option for installation.

  • Factory primed & undercoated
  • Only a light sand & top coat needed
  • Saves valuable decorating time
Our recommendation. Undercoated boards are precision machined, sanded, primed, de-nibbed, factory undercoated, sanded again and individually quality checked, leaving only a light sand and final top coat on site.

Why buy direct from the manufacturer?

Many online retailers simply advertise products, then pass your order to a third-party manufacturer. At Cutting Edge we make every board ourselves, quality check every order and dispatch directly from our own West Midlands factory. When you contact us, you're speaking to the people who actually make your order, not a call centre or marketplace.

Why MDF instead of softwood?

Every board is produced from premium High Density Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF. Unlike natural timber it has no knots, splits, shakes, grain defects or resin pockets, and is far less likely to warp, twist, bow, shrink or expand. The result is a straighter, more consistent product that's easier to install and takes a superior painted finish.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be cut to size on site?
Yes. Our boards cut easily using standard woodworking tools such as a mitre saw. Order the nearest length up and trim to fit.
Does moisture-resistant MDF swell?
Our MR MDF is specifically manufactured for internal use and performs exceptionally well when correctly installed and decorated. It's suitable for bathrooms and cloakrooms where occasional humidity is present.
Can I fit it myself?
Yes. Many homeowners fit our skirting themselves. If you're confident with a mitre saw and measuring accurately it's an achievable DIY project. For larger or complex layouts, many customers use a professional carpenter.
Does it come with matching architrave?
Most profiles have matching architrave available so you can frame doors and windows in the same style. We also manufacture matching window boards, wall mouldings, dado rails and plinth blocks.
Can I return made-to-order boards?
As these are manufactured specifically to your requirements, please read our returns policy before ordering.
Do you deliver nationwide?
Yes, throughout mainland UK using our own delivery fleet and trusted courier partners. Collection from our West Midlands factory is also available by prior arrangement.
